Disability

Disability is looking at factors affecting the patient’s conscious level. Awareness and arousal are the two components that make up consciousness.

    • The ability to open your eyes in response to voice/ pain

    • Controlled by the reticular activating system in the brain stem

  • Awareness

    • The ability to respond and interact with the environment, for example when patient’s obey commands when assessing GCS.

    • Indicates the cerebral cortex is working
