ABCDE Summary

Once you have completed your ABCDE assessment, you should have some understanding of what the main concerns are and have started to address life threatening problems. It is not necessary to have a diagnosis at this stage.

You will now have time to gather information from other sources such as the patients clinical record, lab and radiology results. Forming a diagnosis and treatment plan is likely to involve the wider multi-disciplinary team, and you will need to make appropriate referrals.

At this stage it should be assessed whether the patient is safe to remain on the ward and what frequency of monitoring is required or whether they need to be transferred to an HDU/ICU area.

Remember to continue to re-assess your patient and their response to treatment.

Stop and think

  • Is the patient better or worse?

  • Do we need any more help?
