Pulmonary Embolism Management

Consider the following, not all will be appropriate for every patient:

1. Oxygen therapy to achieve target saturation

2. Fluid bolus if hypotensive or signs of shock

3. Investigations, such as CTPA, V/Q scan, dopplers and echocardiogram

4. Bloods tests such as D-dimer (useful in ruling out PE if low or normal)

5. Treatment with anticoagulation to prevent further clot formation

6. If anticoagulation contra-indicated consider placement of inferior vena cava (IVC) filter

7. Consider thrombolysis or pulmonary thrombectomy in severe cases

8. Monitoring, they may need continuous cardiac monitoring in an HDU environment

9. Analgesia
